I read the guide, got the whole converted v1 files package, unzipped to the 3dn folder, and my game ROM (SMB3) there, renaming it to mario3.nes to match the 3DN file.

When I set the emulator to VR, the game is all glitchy from the get go.

Right from the start, the text in the start menu has varying depths for numbers and letters. Then, in the game map, several blocks pop out from the map's surface, and in the one supposed to have a spade, the spade is hollow.

Then, start the game and, where do I begin? The thing is a mess. The depth is all over the place, and as you walk the whole thing varies at random.

Am I doing anything wrong?

Also, is it me or the the V2 3DN repository is gone? I remember there being some 60 topics there and now I can only see like 10.

Anything I'm missing there too?

I'll appreciate any help.

I'm actually playing it with anaglyph glasses, and i'm looking forward VR implementation (i tried a '-vrmode openvr' command line without luck :p). Oh just one thing, i was not able to make the stereoscopic 3d 'pop up' in 3D Vision (the relief is only behind the screen), it would be great to have a custom anaglyph shader with tweakable vergence. Geod if you need a beta tester, or anything related to Unity dev, please count me in.

My main wishlist is that I would eventually love to see a version of the emulator ported to the Linux-based Raspberry Pi. Playing on my computer is fine, but I do most of my retro gaming on my TV. I've got the Pi running Retropie and Emulationstation, and my God I would LOVE to have 3DNES functional on that thing. Is this something you ever envision yourself working on to implement? Even if it's a premium feature, I would happily pay for a version like this.

1st of all you will need 2 programs (you dont wanna install anything? even so its installer, its just extracting folder to same location from which it was executed, everything here is portable) - (if you have any of this already then dont download just use yours)

1. download both extract now you can place them anywhere you want and just run them both

2. click this link http://pastebin.com/raw/2LZpC6QA copy whole content of this site (ctrl+A) open notepad++ and paste it there (ctrl+V)

3. in notepad++ hold ctrl+F now choose replace tab from top of the window

4. now is da configuration in "find what" field you input "button b" in "replace with" field you type button you wanna use for that action for example put in "q" in "replace with" just one symbol without "button" word and you just hit button on the right its 3rd from the top with "replace all"

5. when you are done select all text and copy all content (ctrl+A > ctrl+C)

there are 1 problem it adds that controls to existing ones which means if you normally attack with Z and with this tutorial add attacking with Q then both Z and Q will do the same thing it wont disable existing controls

Progress is coming along fine, but I figured I'd show some issues I encountered that I figured Geod may want to know about. I'm logging the issues in a list below, after the two videos.

I'm running the Mac v1.1 3DNES version of the emulator.


This is what I've been currently working on. Date timestamp is in the title.


This is the game as it normally appears on an NES, for comparison's sake.




So far, I've done most of the opening cinematic. Completed the title screen. And a good portion of the first level of the game, Mushroom Forest. However, the issues I've discovered so far:

  • @0:00 to 0:08 - In the opening of the game as soon as it's loaded, the first two lines of text that show up should be 1905 then NEW YORK. However, 3DNES has trouble displaying all the sprites for the text. I noticed this is commonly a problem not with the game, but rather with certain emulators. Cross reference with the intro to the 2nd video.
  • @0:08 - I have pushed this block of sprites back and Saved it several times. Seems to pop back out whenever I load the game and do more work.
  • @2:21 - The dirigible flying into the sky has the top half of it separating and sliding off. This happens regardless of what version of the game you play, and seems to occur in older emulators, much like the glitch about the opening text at the start of the game (Just like when it's supposed to say 1905, New York). Cross reference with the intro to the 2nd video.
  • @3:16 - Vines on the wall reference the same object, apparently. When I push the vines on the wall above into the background, the vines below Nemo go into the background too. Vice versa, when I pull the vines below Nemo to the front, the vines above come out too.
  • @6:23 - Rock pillar to the right of Nemo & the Frog cannot be pulled forward without pulling the entire back wall forward because the sprite for it is connected to the background wall. You can see that it is a solid pillar because there's a dark orange outline around it against the back wall, indicating it is solid. If you could somehow pull the sprite independently from the wall, it would look much better.
  • @7:02 - Big Red Mushroom object was converted to a cylinder, however parts of the top of the mushroom did not render correctly and still look a bit blocky and square.

My personal thoughts so far is that 3DNES has a lot of good potential to be a great emulator. There are still some issues that need to be fixed though. I just thought I'd share my discoveries here so far while working on the game so Geod and others would be able to see it.

ok 1st of all this is image of how it could look



i just wanna say im not master of aesthetics and placement so this is just my concept same as my english so dont cry (for sure that window is too big now)

but

instead of drop down menu in layer and pattern we could have RADIO buttons (it dont make sens in my language but works like this if you select this option it will automatically deselect other options in that section and choose that only 1 you selected)

instead of being only able to typing numbers we could have arrow buttons above and below each square where still we could type number but just add that little buttons so we could change numbers with mouse click in range from 0~9

add option to auto adjust changes whenever we change something (on and off switch)

add option for us to hold SHIFT to select multiple objects and CTRL to remove objects from selection so we can edit many objects at once and only the ones we want

SAVE to 3DN file button should be ALSO in editor window

and preset option and tabs

so like when we configure lets say our main charracter layer depth zscale and pattern so we could save it to preset then rename this preset to lets say characters and then click on enemy and load that same preset so we dont need to configure it from the start checking zscale layer depth and pattern on our character again to go back and set it up on enemy

just click enemy load preset puff done

add and remove presets buttons so we could just with few clicks edit more objects more quickly without doing same configuration over and over

i dont know how much of this is possible but i know much of it would be worth it cause it would speed up a ton making 3DN files

There is no way I can make videos of games I've worked on for the Repository.

I was wondering if anyone would be interested making some videos for the 3DN files people post in the repository. Not only would this better show off the work that has been done here, but it should bring some more attention to this project.

A couple of hours ago I lost all my Mega Man 2 progress thanks to an auto-save bug in 3DNes (it sounds like this will be addressed in a future version—wait a second after saving!). I figured if I'm going to do this again from scratch, I might as well broadcast it. Maybe people watching can pick up on tricks or offer their own.

A lot. It's a ton of fun to edit these games! Geod, thank you. Even in it's current state it's great. I've always loved shadowboxes and I love the way these games are rendered, with the shadows and stuff. It can be very challenging to make a scene look right (sometimes impossible!) but that's why it's fun.

I can also see that there is a lot of room for creative expression here. One person will see it differently than another. Does the character look better as a sprite or as a vertical cylinder? It's up to you. It makes me feel a little more ownership over my game and characters, without having to learn a complicated programming language or anything. The simplicity of 3dnes is one of my favorite features as well.

There's plenty more than could be done to the program (multiple selections, maybe the ability to move the light source, save states!) but it's great right now. In a way the limitations force you to be even more creative than if you had a hundred options. It would be cool to have a middle layer, but I don't even know how it works to begin with. I'm sure magic is involved. Either way, my 8-year-old self is in heaven, thanks Geod. I haven't been this amazed by a program since the early days of Minecraft (Before Mojang or even survival mode!) As soon as I have a few extra bucks, I will happily donate to this project.

I have several games I've been "working" on, I suppose I'll put a few up in the repository, even though I'm not sure I'm very good at this.

It's been fun so far and the editor is fairly easy to use but I want to offer some criticisms.

1.) Sometimes clicking on whichever sprite you want to edit just doesn't work for some reason, which means I have use the Nav buttons.

2.) Which leads to my second criticism, which is that the Nav buttons are fairly unpredictable. I never know which sprite the Nav button will jump to. It's not terrible but I often seem to loop around every other sprite before I get to the one I actually want to edit.

3.) A frame rewind button to accompany the frame advance buttons would be extremely helpful, especially in auto-scroll games like Sqoon where the background elements seem to jump back and forth between the foreground and background layers as they enter and exit screens.

4.) I believe there should be a more user-friendly method of moving sprites forwards and backwards on the Z axis. For example, in Sqoon, there's little buildings on the bottom of the level and for whatever reason, one of the roofs just refuses to align with the rest of the buildings despite it having the same values for Depth, Layer and ZScale.

5.) The tutorial videos are helpful but this program would still highly benefit from an actual readme or manual. I can't tell what AS does, for example, and I can't seem to find it in the videos.

6.) I think 3DNes could use some kind of feature that applies a global setting to all sprites, or the ability to edit more than one sprite at a time. When I first started up Sqoon, all of the copyright and intro text was all over the place--the layers, depth, zscale all seemed to be entirely random, and it took at least 30 minutes just setting them all on the same layer.

7.) And some minor feature requests: The ability to set transparencies per sprite and set whether a sprite casts a shadow or not.

Looking forward to your response and definitely looking forward to seeing where 3DNes goes! It's super impressive as is.

how to use it (i think)

when you open a rom and click on a sprite you are presented with customizations for said sprite.

  • layer: the two major/most important options of the program are for "front" and "back" layer. think of an invisible wall in the direct middle of the 3d. would you like the sprite in front of or behind that invisible wall?
  • depth: how thick the sprite is.
  • zscale: how far the sprite is pushed on the on the z axis. think of it as how far the sprite is pushed towards you, the viewer. doesn't seem to be any value unless separating background layers.
  • as: removal of shadows for certain pattern types.
  • pattern: this is where it gets tricky. though the programming is super awesome, and it does a great job with the cylinders, i think 90% of sprites don't look good/benefit from cylinders. too many cylinders on the screen make it hard for my brain to process what's going on in the game. i stick with unknown (flat 2d) most of the time.


tips & tricks

save/back-up constantly. when you hit the save button it takes the program a little time to save. if you immediately close the program after hitting the save button without it finishing it will erase your 3dn file. the only way to know for sure is to wait a good ten seconds or what i do: (i have two monitors) i leave the folder open in another window and watch to see the 3dn file size change.

flickering: when you load a rom and play you'll probably notice most of the background objects flickering, or jumping around a lot. this is due to it's layer not being set to front or back. easy fix.

won't save/change edits: if you make edits that won't save when you re-check, make sure you press on all the drop-down menus and select the exact same thing, and hit adjust a few times. you should see the sprite change. if you don't then you probably have the pattern set on a cylinder instead of unknown. cylinders automatically set their depth to the closest you want it to be. sometimes it can't do what you want. (example: you keep making the depth 10, but upon re-opening it's always 5. that's the highest it can go for that sprite/cylinder.)

plan for the whole game. nes roms didn't have a whole lot of room for data, so images are recycled a lot. before you spend 4 hours making the best 3d eye-popping level the world has ever known, do a little bit of it and then play the whole level to see how it's effecting the rest of it. most notably this goes for any and all text.

only edit games you're good at. this doesn't have a typical emulator arsenal. no savestates, no cheats, no help. it's old school. you're on your own. in order to design levels you need to be able to get to the levels. we all know some of the best games are the hardest, but what's the point in investing hours of your time only to have 20% of a completed game?

sometimes sprites need double edits: when you finish a side scrolling game level, re-play finished levels and slowly walk forward (by tapping the d-pad right over and over) looking for background sprites to jump out for one frame. sometimes they're hard to notice unless you're looking for them, but once corrected the game will seem smoother than before.

did i mention to back-up your work?

i wish there was:

  • a bit more room in terms of the z axis (front and back).
  • zoffset. this would make anything possible from a design point of view.
