One of the biggest hurdles? Finding high-quality, affordable, and properly licensed 2D art. A great art style can make your game stand out, while placeholder graphics can stall a project indefinitely.

Fortunately, the internet is brimming with incredible resources. But sifting through them can be a full-time job. That's why we've curated this list of the top 5 best sites for 2D game assets. Whether you need assets for prototyping, a game jam, or your commercial release, your search ends here.

If you had to sell digital products through this platform, what would they be, besides books or images?

https://matthornb.itch.io/

WHAT IS THERE ON  THIS ITCH PAGE?

- a lot of efficient, even mobile-friendly 3D assets, both .FBX and .OBJ, with UV maps and textures, including contemporary interior objects, suburban/urban street details, and nature objects [trees, bushes, grasses, wildflowers, ferns...] across multiple types of outdoor settings.

-VFX elements and video overlays for use in videos, cutscenes, etc. Explosions, fire, smoke, debris bursts, water FX and other elements. Much of it is real-world photography at high speed against a flat black or blue background for easy compositing.

-2300+ texture image files, across well over 600 total materials, seamless PBR materials based on a wide range of real-world photography sources.

-some free assets in the mix too, including a snow overlay, some digital explosion FX, and horror/blood assets. More free assets likely to arrive soon - there are some free 'seasonal' objects there, for autumn, and while that's currently a freely-downloadable subset of the Forests & Flowers paid asset pack, it will be expanded at some point to become a free standalone pack of multi-holiday decor/details.

-a few pages relating to indie games in development but they're generally not quite ready for release yet. Most of them are likely to go live on Itch within the next 9-10 months if everything progresses as planned. Some maybe as early as this May, and I'm hoping that generates a lot of activity once it happens. Some of the games will have demos [some features limited but still playable] or free versions with all features functional but some ads placed on the menus.

-several teaser pages for additional asset packs due to be released between now and fall 2023.

WHY IS THIS BEING MENTIONED RIGHT NOW?

I'm about to launch another one of my ridiculous bundle sales. St. Patrick's Day sale, 93% off bundle of everything I have here.

So $2.27 for 3000+ asset files with more on the way over the rest of this year. Other sales will exist around the year, mainly during holidays.

ARE THESE BUNDLES ANY GOOD?

I've made around a hundred sales of asset collections and/or bundles to date between Itch.IO and Etsy and while most people who buy these don't take the time to post feedback, when they do it's usually very positive. I figure this is just the start - the more positive comments and ratings accumulate, the more people will be willing to make the choice to buy, and this could finally snowball into a much bigger thing.

More feedback -> more sales -> more resources to create more, better updates and additional assets -> happier buyers -> more feedback.

I'd really like to expand all of this dramatically over the next few months, and I'm putting a lot of work into making even more asset content, based on the hope that eventually the effort will be profitable or at least break even, despite the low pricing, simply because a lot of people are interested. I'd like this to be a full-time thing and would love to finish 2023 with thousands of new additional assets created, and a bunch of long-awaited indie games released.

And I get the sense that many people ARE really interested even if most viewers have not made a buying decision yet. I've seen over 100,000 page views on my Itch analytics, since the pages began opening in early 2018. That's thousands of people visiting, and visiting repeatedly, opening multiple pages per visit. Thousands of downloads, especially on the free asset packs.

So I'm thrilled by all of that, and I'm excited about where this could be headed.

Thank you all so much!

Are you planning for a fallout, post-apocalyptic setting for your next party? or your next game scenario setting begins in a desertic area?

I’m a pro game artist who worked on a couple of indie and mobile games over the years. I love making isometric and modular game art to create and enrich worlds in game engines and VTTs. I made 64 assets separated in 2 packs, it's not pixel art =):

  • 2*32 isometric and modular game art as PNG files
  • 256px wide resolution
  • 512px wide resolution (more or less, depends on assets)
  • A Unity Package containing the 512px textures assets and an isometric palette to begin your level design right away! Make sure to set up the Pixel Per Unit at the asset’s width to match it with your grid! (A demo here of how it looks like in Unity) / PS: the grid alignment is now fixed =)

Don’t waste any more time looking for game art that doesn’t convey what you want to say: Download the pack here and engage your players with a unique art style that resonates with them!

Let me know what you think!

All the best!

Formulations there are cryptic and its usage is peculiar. In fact, the main document is always evolving and I link to it for each particular game, working only on the editing in each "daughter" document. I colour the cells that are addressed by a given mechanic in a given colour. This allws me to see what is left unadressed and what is covered by a given mechanic. Google end-of-lifed the API that made it possible so I thought the tool was dead, but recently I decided to try to resurrect the tool for the Zoom gaming era. As far as I understand things there's no way for regular people to create their own Zoom filters, but OBS (the software that most video game streamers use) has a mode where it "streams" to a virtual web cam that you can tell Zoom to use as an input, so this new version is just javascript and HTML and you configure OBS to display the page with the dice results on its internal browser and overlay it over your normal webcam. If you are interested in trying it out there are instructions here: danmaruschak.github.io/RPGHUD/ (I'm treating this as an alpha right now, i.e. I think it has all the features in needs to work but I won't know for sure until some more people try it).

It's a web app for playtesting storytelling games online with friends and it's geared toward light games like 'For the Queen'

You can add your custom content by pasting a link to a spreadsheet; no coding needed. More info about Story Synth, including how-to guides, here: https://storysynth.org/about/

My goal for Story Synth is to lower the bar to designing and testing games. There are three main ways to use it:

1) Running a playtest by pasting in a spreadsheet link
2) Publishing your game through it (requires some code)
3) Hacking it to add your own mechanics (lots of code)

Open source codebase if you want to extend it further: https://github.com/randylubin/Story-Synth

Happy to answer any questions!

Keeping this in mind I have created an extension tool in unity which you can use in your project to select the language at the initialization stage of your project so it will set that language for the whole of your project automatically.

I'm aware of these so far:

  1. Google Drawings: serviceable, but slightly limited, though it probably won't need a subscription or go offline in the near future.
  2. miro: and other whiteboard apps, but miro looks like the best from what I've seen. In my experience it's smoother and more functional than Google Drawings (and includes stuff like a huge library of scalable icons and smoothening when using freehand drawing tools), but I've already had to drop one whiteboard app for going subscription-only even for personal users.
  3. roll20: there are some map-games for sale here, but at least some are only for use with roll20 (e.g. their version of The Quiet Year), and the tools are pretty clunky. On the plus side, it's designed for RPGs, so it has dice and cards built in, plus macros for more complex things if you pay for premium.

They're all free (for now), but who knows in the future.

https://itch.freezing.top/t/489082/wwise-is-free-for-game-jams-Wwise is Free for Game Jams !https://itch.freezing.top/t/489082/wwise-is-free-for-game-jams-Thu, 20 Jun 2019 17:00:40 GMTThu, 20 Jun 2019 17:00:40 GMTThu, 20 Jun 2019 17:00:40 GMTHi all,

So we have put in place new part of our website to allow you to now register a game jam for a free Wwise license. The game jam license will allow you to use Wwise (no audio asset cap and access to all premium plugins) for the duration of the jam. The license will be valid a bit before the jam start date (so you can install everything and set your project up) and will cover up to a month after the Jam so you can keep tweaking after that.

Here's a quick video showing how easy it is to set up !

For more detailed info and to register a Game Jam : https://www.audiokinetic.com/community/game-jams/

After the game jam's license expires, you can continue to work on the project, we can get you set up with a proper license to cover the project. We have paid and free commercial and non-commercial licenses.

To register your project (after the end of the game jam).  Visit the website, and under the Get Wwise menu, click 'Register my Project'.  Then, choose 'Commercial' and 'More than 500 sounds', then fill out the form.  That'll come to us for approval, and once you have been approved, you'll have a trial license to cover the prototyping phase of your project.

If you have any questions, I'm here for that : You can reach me at mspoirier@audiokinetic.com

Hope to see many registered jams !

Cheers,

-Max

https://itch.freezing.top/t/424237/design-frameworksDesign Frameworkshttps://itch.freezing.top/t/424237/design-frameworksFri, 22 Mar 2019 12:48:30 GMTFri, 22 Mar 2019 12:48:30 GMTFri, 22 Mar 2019 12:48:30 GMTSometimes, it helps to look at your game in a structured way. These are some ways of thinking about your game that I've found useful. They're basically a way to focus your thoughts on one specific aspect of the game at a time. When I'm working on a game and I find myself stuck, I will sometimes turn to one of these tools to focus my thoughts and reflect on it to see if that helps clarify things. Sometimes it helps. (Sometimes it doesn't.)

This worksheet starts you thinking about how to allocate resources, and what is important for your game.

The Power 19 is a list of questions to ask yourself about your game. It's a way to make sure you're thinking about different aspects of it, and how they all tie together to reinforce what your game is about.

Vince Baker suggests that all games necessarily make statements about different topics: about your fictional subject matter, about roleplaying as a practice, and about human nature. So it's useful to ask yourself what your game is saying about each of those. What insights is your game built around? Is it saying what you want to say about each?

The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses by Jesse Shell is a book structured as a series of thought experiments, to help you think through different aspects of your game design. It's primarily aimed at videogames (the industry Shell works in) but has lessons applicable to tabletop games as well. (There's a free app for the lenses, which is more useful if you've read the book.)

Each of these has underlying assumptions that might not apply to your project (e.g., the worksheet's Allocate Authorities section doesn't make sense in a GMless or single player game, many lenses in Schell's book don't apply to analog RPGs.) But they still can be useful mental tools for thinking about a game. Even realizing that your game doesn't fit the author's assumptions is a significant thing to know about your game. Just don't let yourself fall into the trap of taking the author's assumptions for granted. That would lead to less creative games, when these tools are supposed to help you create more creative games.

Maybe you have some other similar frameworks for thinking about game design? I'd be interested to  see what you use to structure your thoughts.

https://www.notion.so/

It’s partly a text editor, but it also has a lot of great options for nested documents, links & lightweight databases. It also has good collaboration support. Plus it looks nice!

It’s free for personal use, though I found myself filling up the free tier with too many images at first. Worth a look, imo.

Let's share some world and campaign organization tools here.

I got in on the Realm Works kickstarter so it was cheap for me, but it's kind of the Most Bonkers detailed thing. The GM version is $50 though. :o Find it here.

Drivethrurpg has a lot of "adventure planners", which are pre-printed PDFs which have a lot of the most common shit in them (but they're typically for fantasy or D&D-a-like games).  Now, I kinda like the Fat Goblin Games ones because they 1) use form fillable PDFs a lot 2) are often broken down into different types of pages so if you are like me and need like 500 NPC pages and 3 monster pages then you can do that easily, and 3) if you're Extremely Into It they'll even send you a hardbound print copy that you can fill out? :o  Anyway, this is their category: Fat Goblin Games Gamemaster Journal section on Drivethrurpg

If you still want to try TiddlyWiki, it's still quite popular but the tools are a little bit more opaque than you might remember them being. Give it a try.

Anyway, post other campaign/world organization software and tools here!
