How does your game fit the theme?
You have to use your time before the storm--the calm phase--to fend off a storm (assault) featuring various storm-themed enemies.

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
I drew all the art from scratch.
Code was mostly done by me except for KidsCanCode's multitarget camera.
SFX was pulled from freesound.org or generated on sfxr.me. (No AI; just random sound sliders). Music was mostly done by me expect for the main menu music, which was done by ACL_Engineering.
Fonts were from public domain bundles.

Full credits can be found in the game description.

This game was really really awesome! You breathed so much life into the music and animations I couldn't help but smile everytime the level music started playing! It would have been fun to see upgrades more often, but honestly I'm surprised there was an upgrade system!! You did a lot in the time given and this was a pleasure to play!!

I liked how the tetris blocks we actual house elements. The sound when enemies clashed against my buildings made it very satisfying to watch the "storm" part. It's cool how there are different enemy types. One of the storm clouds protected me by throwing a straight bar above me, while another one murdered me on the next, 8th wave.

Loved this game! had a blast playing it! very interesting enemies and concept!

Submitted(+1)

Really cool concept, loved the tetris mechanics the game overall feels polished too, nice work :D

Another game that feels kind of polished, I mean of course there are new upgrades and blocks you can add, but stuff I would like to point to is arena being of center (14 on one side and 13 on the other), I mean how could you, also the music doesn't have a seamless loop which was driving me crazy. Also the game could do with something like reseting your build and giving you a longer timer every 5 or so rounds because later on the most optimal strategy seams to be just dropping all the blocks you can on the sides without even a thought about making it stable.

Developer

Dangit I didn’t notice the arena being offcenter. To the dev dungeons I go. Also the lack of seamless loop was something I tried to mitigate, but unfortunately the software I used to make the music (Jummbox) just couldn’t export with a seamless loop. I probably could’ve edited it in post to make it loop seamlessly, but I was pressed for time.

Thanks for playing!

i was having fun until i lose =) nice game i played for like 15 min, it will better if you ad rotation in blocks because its impossible  to fill them perfectly

Really like this game. I agree that the beginning phase could be sped up in terms of how fast you level up. But generally this has lots of potential as a (mobile) game release if you were to polish it a bit. I did find a slight bug where the tornado jumped all the way through the house, kind of bounced over me, and then went off screen the other end, and it was the last one and took maybe 30 seconds to register as gone. Generally very good entry though!

Enjoyed the godot splash screen and the unique take the theme. The tetris meets defense thing was super cool. Great work! Congrats and good luck!

"I wish the physics played a bigger role"---immediately gets hit by a stormcloud that launches my wall into the tower, knocking over the entire structure

"I wish there were enemies that came from the sky"---immediately gets pelted by truck sized balls of hail

"I wish the enemies came faste--"

Super fun game, so much personality in the art. Honestly the calm phase is the first 15 waves, after that the game has no chill. I'm in full panic mode trying to rebuild the entire structure again, while my character smiles back at me knowing this is it

Slight critiques:

- I do think you could truncate the first 10 waves or so, cut it down to 5 and let the player get to the chaos faster so they can see the game for what it really is

- The timer blocks the center of the player once the camera zooms out, making it hard to see that area when building

- Not sure how to fix this, but when the camera zooms out, it aliases the art, making it look suboptimal. I think the resolution should match the zoomed out camera, and then you can zoom in from there

Great submission! One of my favourites!

Thanks for the feedback! First two criticisms have easy fixes, but the last one’s kinda tricky.

Storm Shelter uses the Nearest renderer (renders closest pixels) to render textures. However, if I use the Linear renderer (combines nearest pixels and renders that), the pixel art looks blurry and not as good. I’m not even sure if some of the minute text (such as the walls from the WALL upgrade having text on them) would be readable with Linear rendering.

If I were to do a postjam version, I’d either include a setting for texture rendering, redraw everything (kinda infuriating), or rescale everything (super infuriating lol, given how I’d have to reprogram a lotta stuff to work with the new scale). Or there’s probably some other solution that I haven’t heard about yet lol.

Thanks for playing! Glad that it was one of your favorites!

Depending on your sprite resolution, a possible fix may be to first find the camera zoom that makes the art look good when zoomed out max. Then every zoom-in is an integer multiple of that (like 2x, 3x, 4x). You could still lerp/tween between 1x and 2x for example, so there will be aliasing as the camera is moving, but once it reaches its destination it should snap the pixels correctly

--- though looking at the art again, I don't think this solution is possible unfortunately

I managed to reach wave 15 haha, actually quite fun. I think more could have been done in the artistic section and in the music, but apart from that it is a great job! :D

A VERY FUNNY GAME GREAT!!!

Gameplay is extremely creative as it takes Tetris and adds elements such as hordes of enemies and someone to protect using the shapes. It also allows for creativity as you're allowed to place shapes as you want as long as they're within a box, letting people come up with many different ways to defend themselves from the horde, which together with the wave system, adds lots of replay value. The wave system with the build and defence phases also helps the game to tie with the theme very well and makes it fun to build, then watch as your beautiful creation is vandalised.

The visuals are very expressive and clearly pays homage to Pizza Tower. It scratches the 'so bad it's actually good' itch very well. The audio is very well done, as the sound effects snuggly fits with what's happening visually and the music perfectly sets the mood for the current phase.

Masterpiece game ⭐ (and words words words)

Developer

You’re actually the first person to compare my art to Pizza Tower, which is kinda surprising since my last game (with a similar artstyle) had nearly everyone comparing the art to PT lol.

Thanks for playing!

Wow! what a unique idea, bring a new direction for Tetris blocks!, reminds me of bridge builder aswell!

Good game!! was able to survive for 8 waves I think. I never felt the OVEN to be so dangerous xD. Saw it fly to the sky and land on the character when the black cloud attacked...

Great idea and implementation for the jam. Kudos!!

Just an amazing and fun game, there is so much variety and how the storm bounces structures is a nice touch!

Great work!

This is a sick game! Combining Tetris with an auto battler is a wild idea but it worked very well. It was cool to see the physics of the different blocks and their reactions to gravity/collisions. The timer for block placing felt nicely tuned to give the player enough time to prep but also short enough to feel the pressure of the incoming storm. The SFX are very well incorporated and add a lot of juice to the game. The jumping enemy was a great addition and the way it could skip over some low building blocks was super neat. My biggest critique is that spam clicking towers on the left and right of the player seems to be the easiest/best way to win and got a bit repetitive after a while (I made it to wave 7 before calling it quits). I'm not sure the best way to remedy this but some mechanics to encourage the player to be more thoughtful with their building strategy might be nice. Overall, I think this is an excellent entry with probably the most innovative concept I have seen so far and plenty of juice and just fun in general, great job!!

Developer(+1)

Yeah I honestly should’ve added more vertically-attacking enemies (The first and only one doesn’t arrive until Wave 15 lol). I’ve been thinking of ideas for a potential post-jam expansion though so hopefully I can get a few ceiling crusaders in there.

Thanks for playing!

The game is very creative and fun! I especially liked the enemies. Good work!

Haha! I enjoyed this quite a bit. It felt like 3 different kinds of games all mixed together. The quirky artwork is top-notch as well. Thanks for playing!

3 games mixed together, you say? I myself describe the game as a mix of Tetris and autobattlers (only 2 lol). What 3 games did you have in mind while playing?

Submitted(+1)

I was thinking Tetris, physics based engineering games ( like bridge builders or shelter builders) and then tower defense.

Submitted(+1)

A pretty unique experience :). Only wished that the shapes would also fall, just like the good ol' original Tetris.

Really innovative idea
