This was awesome! I love the progression, and the stress of shooting the enemies, avoiding the kraken and steering clear of obstacles :P
Very well done, I enjoyed this a lot!
I'm glad to hear that!! The guys who did all the balancing will be pleased to see that the game feels rewarding but still blood pumping! <3
I wasn't match against the kraken... but still enjoyed the game! and I'm digging the graphics aswell( ̄▽ ̄)b
Thanks! The Kraken fight can certainly be a toughie haha
Awesome!
Thanks!
Great game! Was fairly easy to figure out what I needed to do at the start. Once I got into a rhythm, it was really fun scampering around my ship trying to keep all the different plates spinning.
Art was great, simple but immediately legible.
Second stage was a bit difficult, and I had difficulty collection upgrades. Were you to add more, perhaps an extra claw mechanic to pickup upgrades, further adding to the chaos?
I fully intend to return and beat that darn Kraken.
Also, I just realized the "Eddy" pun, kudos.
Thanks for playing! We wanted to have that kind of chaotic "I have to do all these things constantly" vibe, so it's good to heat that succeeding! I agree, our art&design peeps were on fire with this one.
You can shoot the resources with the cannons to collect them, if that's what you mean! Though it can be annoying to try and collect them whilst also fighting, understandably. It's all about managing when you slow down versus when you speed up to make sure you give yourself enough time to do things like repair and collect loot! I wish you the best of luck helping Captain Eddy take down that menace
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! It's a hard balance to find the right difficulty, especially in a game jam setting where people may be playing games out of their usual style and also with us not having time to add something like a tutorial.
Max's art style always blows me away!
We definitely had plans to add more kinds of upgrades that would stick more things and mechanics to the ship but had to cut back when a lot of the initial setup took longer than we'd hoped.
Super glad the challenge left you craving more! I still can't quite reach the kraken every time and I spent hours balancing the dang thing, but I do feel like it's always rewarding when you get there and am excited for you to experience that high too! :D
I like this game a lot, but its kinda challenging a punitif. I would love to see this with a bigger ship and multiplayer, because having to do all the jobs is kinda hard. Great job
Thanks, we appreciate that yes it is a rather difficult game for people just figuring it out for a jam haha. Would certainly be interesting to have a bigger ship, I think initially we discussed NPCs who you could rescue and would help you run the ship but alas.
Good take on the theme, great art and sound. Ship is just a bit tricky to control
Thank you! Yeah the ship controls seem to be the main point of contention haha. Our sound guy has certainly done a great job too. I hope you enjoyed it!
Very good idea! It's difficult to manage the ship. I think this might actually work really well as a multiplayer game like Overcooked. It really gives me similar vibes with the presentation and gameplay.
Very nice, it is a fun game - the ship is a bit hard to navigate, but other than that very cool
Glad you think so! Out of curiosity, when you say the ship is hard to navigate do you mean moving the captain around on the deck or, steering the ship?
Steering the ship, it kinda did not what i wanted it to do :)
Yeah, that's what I suspected aha, thanks for the feedback!
This is a cool idea and it was fun to play. It was hard controlling the ship though, or at least from the start, and it was pretty hard, but good work guys!
Glad you had fun!
This was a ton of fun to play! It took me a while to realize I that I wouldn't immediately fall into the center with the sails down and had to restart a few times because of that but once I got the hang of it, this was really satisfying to progress through. The artwork was also beautiful and the ship controlled great. Overall, this reminded me a ton of the ship sections from Sly 3.
Yeah, we rebalanced it a touch as we found sliding quickly to the middle detracted from actually being able to fight effectively and you'd crash into things without realizing. I think there's some very slow drift to the middle and you're always moving forwards of course. Glad you had fun though, did you make it to the Kraken fight?
I did! It took a few attempts but once I got the second upgrade, it was smooth sailing (pun intended) to beat the kraken; though, I was cutting it a bit close near the end. The second upgrade was a barrier for me for a while since the larger ships kept wiping me out but once I realized I didn't have to rush with the sails down, I spent more time repairing my ship and was able to survive them easier.
Deam that was hard, but I loved the game! The music is fire, the art is really charming and the ideas is super cool.
I couldn’t even come close to winning but I had a lot of fun regardless, nice work!
Glad you liked it!
In hindsight we should have toned things down a bit before the cuttoff. I think our perspective on the difficulty was skewed by our familiarity after playing throughout development.
For example, it makes a big difference if you know the ship can be healed via interacting with the sails at the back. Something we'd have loved to tutorialise but ran out of time for unfortunately.
Ooooo, So the ship could be healed. That makes a lot of sense 😅
I had a lot of fun regardless so that’s what matters!
This is really cool! I love the artstyle and the general concept was really eye catching. I don't know if I was doing something wrong but the pillars seem to have a lot of health. Would love to avenge Captain Eddy for my subpar ship driving skills 🙏
Glad you think so! The ship takes a bit of getting used to, I think we just got the hang of it through so much testing. If you wanted to destroy the pillars you need to upgrade your ship by collecting the crates and resources in the water (either by shooting or driving through them)
Just to add, the initial resources are dropped by the rafts and the secondary resource is dropped by the boats 😊 It's the kind of thing we'd love to have communicated through a tutorial or something similar but due to game jam constraints we've hoped the UI and some exploring/trial & error is enough to help people discover everything they need!
The Game is really well designed and I love the art direction and the sky reminding me of a vapor wave vibe. The music and sound also fit great.
Though the controls for the ship are brutal, especially when trying to grab stuff in the water. I really like how you have to manage not only dodging, but firing cannons, picking up cargo and keeping the ship in one piece while also upgrading to defeat the kraken. It was really fun.
Really well made you guys killed it :)
Thank you, means a lot to us and glad you liked it :) The ship can be a bit hard to control at times (especially between being blown up and shunted by other ships) but it's feedback we appreciate
Fun and challenging, was satisfying to beat the Kraken. Didn't realise you could heal the ship until my third time. Interesting and unique take on the theme loop.
Yay! Glad you enjoyed it, we weren't sure if people were actually beating the Kraken so glad to get some confirmation! We knew we needed a healing icon, but it slipped my mind until it was too late to add it... oops...
It's the second game I play with ships and kraken in the middle of a whirlpool, and tbh I can't get enough of them! Very fun idea, and the art is amazing! Great work.
Thank you! We're hoping to see a bunch of whirlpool/kraken games as it's always fun to see other takes on similar concepts.
Really nice. Sadly it's a little easy to get stun locked and die in seconds and you can do nothing about it. Otherwise, kraken work!
Thanks! We agree the collision stuff could definitely use some work but it took us a long time to even get collisions to a workable state so we wanted to focus on making the rest of the game playable too at that point! :D
Yeah I figured as much. 4 days is not a long time.
cool game
Thanks :D hope you enjoyed it
i did :D
Apparently a kraken in a whirlpool is not such an original idea afterall ;)
Really great atmosphere on this game - the music and the art is really nice! It feels epic how you can run around the ship and choose what to control.
Only thing is that it feels hard to control the ship, and therefore feels less responsive (as a normal ship probably is) and made it hard to pick up crates when close to the kraken.
Whirlpools and Krakens, a great combo we both settled on ;D
Steering was something we struggled with a bit. We err'd more on the side of big and unweildy but probably too far in the end. Glad you liked running around the ship!
Really interesting take on the theme, I like how subtle and built into the world the loop is! The visuals and gameplay systems are really well done. I think transitioning from a station back to free roaming can be a bit jarring with the camera sometimes though. Overall very fun, and very professional looking!
Thanks! Took a while to settle on direction after hearing the theme and I'm really glad we went with oue whirlpool idea :D I'm really proud of how all the visuals turned out too and totally agree about some of the transitions, wish we had more time to iron things like that out! Glad you enjoyed :)
