How does your game meet GBJam's theme?
We have implemented a variety of gameplay elements that match the unlucky theme. the main one being dealing with your bad luck in and out of battle with how you use your cards and how your cards (and bad luck) can be used against you.

This is amazing, it plays and feels good, and it sounds very nice, even if the default footsteps are more or less gunshots.

The game seems to say that testing luck is a chance thing, but I seem to fail even at 8, so I guess that's not it.

A combat system with cards — I like that. I also like that you have to collect your cards beforehand and that the game offers so much help. Great game!!!

Appreciate the feedback!

Love the music in this one! I did find text font to be a bit difficult to read, and the dialogue boxes did get cut off at times, but it wasn’t too bad. The combat was fun, if a bit punishing. The testing your luck enemy action was interesting, I enjoyed the quick time event that asked you to remember which cards were which, though it did discourage me from using my more powerful cards, which, with them already having a higher luck cost than the others was already sort of the case with how important having luck is.

Thanks for the feedback!

I really enjoyed this! It was cool to see a fully fledged deck builder made for the jam. The card battler mechanics are simple enough to believe that they could have been on the gameboy but complex enough to have strategy involved. It was a bit tough to figure out at first but definitely helped by the tutorial cat. Overall was a great game!

It’s always nice to see a turn-based rpg, very GameBoy-coded! The timer when you fail a luck test felt just a little bit too short most of the time, but other than that I quite liked the battle system. Good art and music, too. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! We'll take the timer critique into account

this looks like an amazing card game but I’m afraid I’m not smart enough to understand it XD I think other people will be able to enjoy it to its fullest the colors are really straining on my eyes x_x also I loaded an empty slot instead of saving and I lost my progression so I kind of ragequit XD

a bit too elaborate graphically to feel like GB, but the battle itself does remind me of the card games on GB so it’s still there somewhat

Music is quite cool, and I like the general ambiance too!!

great work!!!

Thanks for the feedback! Sorry the palette was an issue for you, saving could definitely be improved.

What a catchy music, loved it !

It seems like there is a lot of content for a jam ! And I was not expecting a fully fledged tutorial ! The gameplay is interesting and fits the theme well but it felt a tad difficult to me.

Feeling the GB soul in there and I liked the dialog, that cat is quirky.

All in all great job ! Congratz !

Developer

thanks for the feedback! Our programmer/writer will definitely appreciate the love for the dialog

The music is awesome. I like the game, though it can be overwhelming at first, especially as there is a LOT to read until you can really start. Some mechanics are confusing at first, though that's a matter of playing more to fully understand everything.

I dislike the font, it makes things a bit harder to read, and there's quite some reading to do.

The music is great! I love card-based games and I think the mechanics are really well-applied. it's fun and doesn't get repetitive. As for the graphics, they speak for themselves; the game has a unique identity and the visuals in the dialogue are a great touch.

I have a couple of suggestions for improvement: I feel like the movement could be much better with a few changes, like waiting for the character to finish moving to a tile before being able to change direction (In my own game, I handled this with a Godot signal, but a simple boolean variable would also work). Also, having a variable that completely locks movement during dialogue would be helpful, since that doesn't seem to happen when the cat talks to you before dying.

Thanks for the feedback! There actually ARE checks to achieve the things you recommended in the code, though evidently they don't always work as planned, haha.

This was really good! There is an impressive amount of content here. Really good work! My favorite aspect was the battles and music.

Developer

Appreciate it!

Very interesting! The mechanics are intriguing, the monster designs are cute, and the soundtrack is cool. The movement is a bit janky, but manageable. Developing this many distinct, complex mechanics in such a short time is truly impressive!

I was a bit surprised by the testing of luck mechanic. It was phrased as if it were a threat for using too much luck, but it usually just refilled my luck completely, something I had assumed I would be doing mostly with cards.

The audio is mixed a little loud; combinations of sound effects regularly peak the audio above 0.0 dB.

Unfortunately, loading back in before the exit after losing to the final boss caused the door to become locked for me again, with me being unable to get keys.

All-in-all, great work!

I can not stress enough how much I like the music, and as someone who has been seeing the game’s thumbnail on the discord I was very excited to try it out and it didn’t disappoint, the color palette is genius and the mechanics are very interesting and kind of balanced, there are some hicks though: first the sfx is wayy too sharp and attacking, I suggest making volume control with a slider specific for the sfx to mellow it down; also the start is very reading-full and boring, it’s not a bad thing necessarily but for a game this small not a lot would bother with reading everything if there is so much; lastly, the tutorial treats the player as if they did well even if they didn’t, this could possibly lead to them starting the game without understanding the mechanics. Overall very solid entry and again, did not disappoint my excitement!

Developer

thanks for the input! We actually have a slider for sfx volume in the settings of the pause menu.  Appreciate all the feedback!

After getting over the initial few combat levels the game became a lot more easy to manage the fights. I actually died to the first enemy and the cat spoke to me as if I won, and then I died after - clearly I did worse than anyone expected, haha.

I was really interested to see where the game went but unfortunately the issues with loading zones softlocked me for good in the end. I'd completed the right, but couldn't go down from the bridge.

Very interesting way to do mechanics for a deckbuilder, impressive use of screen space, and I wish my review could've factored in some of the later areas. Music was excellent.

Developer(+1)

sorry you had to deal with that. We definitely miss some more softlocks before the deadline even with it being playable from beginning to end . I honestly recommend taking advantage of the save menu located in the settings tab of the pause menu.

Appreciate all the input and feedback

As a cards game lover I really enjoyed this one! I found the luck system really interesting, I loved the duel UI and the cards and effects were just alright. I lost a bunch of times till I discovered which were the weak guys to level up first against them, cause with low level some 8HP creatures are just impossible as damage overwhelms your possible healing.

Good work here!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, maybe a visual indicator of strength, or some ways to level out outside of combat would have been good.

First of all, congrats on the monumental achievement of getting this done in time because I can imagine a ton of work went into these systems. I struggled a bit with the combat because of it being luck based, but I also understand why you did that and did think this game fit the theme very nicely, so kudos on that. Honestly, just very impressed with what you achieved here in the time given. Keep up the good work!

Developer

much appreciated.  Not gonna lie. Even with the 10 days we thought the scope was to crazy.

Love the art (very undertale-esc) but I am having trouble 'getting into it' so to speak.

Developer

I respect that. Even when I was playtesting it took me awhile to get use to things. Appreciate the feedback!

cool idea having luck a resource in a combat deckbuilder. i found the game a bit too chatty for my taste. i loved the character portrait and the music. good work :)

Thanks!
