this is a really cool idea, but I feel like the musical loops were too interesting and made the gameplay harder than it needed to be. i think shorter more predictable loops would improve the experience greatly, especially when introducing loads of different mechanisms/instruments. the fruityloops style beat grid was a nice helper, but some of the colour choices were hard to see

nice work!

Wow, I like the idea!

Cool idea to sync the level to the music! I was getting slightly owned as the mental stack built but it was awesome seeing the music progress!

This is such a cool concept! Great creativity

It reminds me of games like Beat Saber or Geometry dash where you can use the rhythm of the music to your advantage to anticipate the game, but this is better.

One thing that frustrated me is that the longer you took on a level the more was music falling behind everything else (the world obstacles and the midi board). Perhaps there is a extremely small delay in the loop that accumulates over time.

One thing I would maybe like more is to keep one beat/song for longer, because just as I got used to the beat and associated sounds with the colors I beat the level and I had to re-learn the associations again. And what felt really good was being able to (almost without thinking) predict the platform appearing/disappearing, and this cruising is what I think could make this game amazing.

Anyways, exceptional work!

It’s definitely possible there is a small time leak, can I ask how long you were on the level for? It should stay perfectly synced to at least one track but the others could potentially get desynced.

I already know how I could enforce that if I could push a fix heh.

The way we originally planned it was there would be one base track, and then we’d layer two more, then it would go to a new base track and repeat for 6 levels.

Unfortunately we just didn’t have enough tracks that worked well like that. But I feel you. The goal is to really get into the beat and just “feel” it – but it’s hard to do that in the current game.

Thanks for the feedback!

It was level 6 I think?

this one:

I am not as good with platforms, so I was definitely there for a while though (probably 5 minutes). Played on Firefox.

Definitely a take I haven't seen yet! Unfortunatley the little guy is impossible to see on my E-Ink monitor hahaha

Really interesting to see the differences in how a beat loop can be applied to the different genres. The jump and aesthetic are both really good and take me back to the old days of playing the N flash games.

If you're going to expand it post game jam, a way to speed the song up slightly would be handy on the trickier levels so you can to get to the part of the song you want to use to dodge an obstacle.

N was explicit inspiration for the visual design of the game – minimalistic and low resolution items in a large level.

I think post jam I’d want to tighten up the relationships between the levels and the music to hopefully reduce the need to wait for specific sections; make the beat a bit more inherently regular in general so you can just move to the beat rather than wait for a specific part of the song

Great idea and well executed, love it

Cool concept, creative, but it's hard to play. Not frustrating tho.

this is a really cool idea!! unfortunately i don't think i'm good enough at recognising beats, got stuck on like the 4th level D:
maybe my laptop speakers are just bad/ my hearing is bad (both very likely), but i feel like i can't hear anything for some of the beats when the bottom of the screen indicates there should be a beat TT
still love the concept and it's a really enjoyable game!! the soundtrack is of course great and i think the visuals match the game well (watching the player's head roll after a mistimed beat and seeing your past attempts on the floor is a really funny touch LOL)

I like the music, i like how everything has it's own sound. but it is hard to tell what is what, even after a few attempts. this is super creative and really cool though! very well done

Tough game! Loved seeing another take on a music based platformer! Very well implemented!

Very creative and lots of fun! It's hard to watch the bottom of the screen while platforming, which makes you really have to listen to the music to get far. Very cool rhythm game

Developer

Yea that was the hope! That you’d check the timeline to get a feel for certain timings, but that you’d play on the “feel” of the beat rather than by watching the timeline. Thanks for playing!

Really cool game! I was hoping someone would make something based off of loop pedals but wasn't sure how to base a mechanic off of it myself, and lo and behold I saw this game! Really cute mix of rhythm game and puzzle platformer!
