Tragically, I just don’t think I have the energy to participate this week… will there be another shark jam in the future?

So as it turns out, I’m not going to be able to make it for unrelated reasons – basically poor time management and misremembering the precise deadline (for some reason I just assumed it was due at midnight my time, not 1pm).
Is submitting late still an option? (In case it’s relevant, I don’t even want a chance at the prize, it was just fun to participate.)
Achievement suggestions:
- Speedpainter: Spend less than five/ten/??? minutes on each individual picture (or a bit longer on a whole set of little things, like a tileset). Maybe this could have different tiers for how short the timer is?
- No Ragrets: Create at least one picture (or all of them?) without ever using the undo button (if digital) or an eraser – allowing for occasional accidental button-clicking out of habit.
- (Can’t think of a name): Use at least one art medium that you’ve never tried before, or have only tried once.
- Achievement-ievement: Include similar achievements (or something inspired by this game jam’s achievements) in your game itself. (Just for fun.)
- Above and Beyond: Don’t use any imagery you/your team didn’t make; all of it is your/your team’s own work.
- But it’s uneven!: Leave at least one imperfection that really bugs you unfixed – could be a typo in your title, a glaring stray pixel, et cetera. If on a team, this should ideally be something in your own work and not someone else’s.
- Grrrr….: This one is a bit more geared towards digital art, but I’ve had fun with it in the past. Choose your least favorite brush, or a random one you really dislike if you can’t pick just one. Draw an entire image with only that brush.
- Where’d the gravity go?: Draw your images sideways or upside-down and then flip them. (Harder than it sounds, at least for me!)
- Pffft, who needs an onion?: Draw an animation one frame at a time, start to finish, without referencing any other frames, even by using gridlines or other tools to keep things aligned. (Name referencing the ‘onion skin’ tool that shows adjacent frames in animation software.)
- I can’t even see my comfort zone from up here: Draw something you’ve previously decided you just don’t have the skill to draw, or that is clearly way too ambitious for your current skill level. (But don’t burn yourself out!)
- Telephone: If on a team – collaborate on a set of images that are supposed to be aesthetically matching (or even images of the same character/subject), but you can’t show each other anything until you’re all done. You just have to go off descriptions. Hard mode: Do this with an animation, with only minimal tweaks to make it work.
No pressure at all to use all or even any of these, of course, and feel free to change the names or wording on any you do use. I just wanted to toss out some ideas that seemed fun and then I kept having more ideas.
Also, not an achievement itself, but it would be fun to encourage people to draw their own achievement badges for the ones they accomplished – or maybe draw them for each other, if they want to?
I can’t wait for this game jam! I already collaborated on a shark-centric game for the RPG Maker game jam earlier, and I’m really excited to research a totally different shark species for this one. 🦈
I’m a little nervous a week will be too short for me to do much at all, though (I tend to be a bit slow/methodical) – would it be okay to work on a few shark sprites before the jam starts if I release them for others to use? Since a lot of the existing shark sprites portray them as fierce and scary. Totally fine if not! Just figured I’d ask, since the rules suggest that it could be acceptable.
Hi! So in the spirit of this game jam, I’m using the followers mechanic in a way it really wasn’t intended: to turn the party into a segmented snake, like the classic arcade game. So far it’s working great, except for an issue where the animations don’t always all start at the same time, so the ‘snake’ ends up looking disjointed as different segments move out of sync. (Unlike the arcade game, to be clear, the segments wiggle back and forth as you move.) It’s inconsistent, though – sometimes it’s in perfect sync, but there’s always a chance that it gets jumbled whenever I start moving after idling for a bit.
I’m guessing it’s because the game engine starts the animation of the followers at slightly different times, or something? It probably starts them moving one after another, and there’s enough of a time gap between them that one follower might be on its second or third frame before the one behind it has even started. I don’t know how it’s all implemented, so I’d need to check and see if that’s the case.
My simple fix of resetting the frame number of each follower to match the player at certain points (using a plugin to target individual followers) didn’t seem to have any effect, so I might need to look into the core RPG Maker code and see where follower movement is managed. Before I waste too much time, though, doea anyone have any advice or potential fixes? I have a lot I want to get done and not enough time to do it all, at least not if I spend too much time on this aspect.
I’m using RPG Maker MV 1.6.1 on Linux (so switching to another version of RPG Maker is not desirable, as I want to stay on Linux). Even just pointing out the line number(s) and the .js file that I want to look at would be a huge help, as I couldn’t find anything helpful with a quick skim. I’m a programmer and I don’t mind diving deep into the code, but I’m still very unfamiliar with gamedev specifically, so I don’t quite know what to look for. (And the relative lack of comments doesn’t help.)
Whoops, sorry! Approved, and also one other thing – I’d like to opt out of the revenue split, at least for now, because I still need to figure out the legal stuff around doing monetary business under a pseudonym/as Critterprinter rather than my legal name. (I’m thankfully in a decent financial position as well.)
That’s probably because it hasn’t been (re-)indexed yet! See here: https://itch.freezing.top/t/4120453/game-quarantined-search-or-indexing-problem-read-this
Thank you so much!!! This was lovely to wake up to. @DeepDarkDescent had the ideas for how the battle system(s) would work and they were both SO MUCH BETTER than what I had pictured. (Filling in the paperwork was originally going to be a simple drag-and-drop puzzle.) I’m really glad you liked it <3
I had no idea there was even a JAWS game, so I looked that one up and you’re right! That’s delightful, hehe. I had a ton of fun finding (and sometimes tweaking) the assets for aesthetics and stuff, especially since we had to use a bunch of different sources but still make it look somewhat cohesive.
About the saves – the intent was that you could save anywhere via the menu. Was that not working, or did we just not make it clear in the UI? I did also want to implement some sort of autosave, but sadly ran out of time. I’m sorry about that! Will make sure to look into it for when the voting period is over.
Hi! I’ve played many a TTRPG, but the only video game RPG I actually know is In Stars And Time. You say “Any other RPG heavy trope such as having lots of party members, scaled down overworlds and town-dungeon-plot-town-dungeon-plot game loops” – but I don’t know how many more of those there are. Do you have a list or something you’re using as a reference? (I know I can look it up, and I plan to do so, but I wanted to ask if you had a full list of specific tropes to make sure I didn’t miss anything.)
The same happened for ours! Apparently it can take a few hours sometimes – as long as there’s a banner on the game’s page itself that says “Submission to RPG MAKER 2025 GAME JAM,” you should be good. (I hope.)

You can also click on the banner to go to the submission rating page for the game – I took a screenshot of ours just in case.
