A very interesting concept. I managed to get some requests right :D. but not all of them. It was very difficult for me.

A bit more leeway, with guesses would have helped in my opinion. for example if you got 50% right, get one extra chance and maybe a checkmark on the mask that was correctly guessed or a crossout if it was wrong.

The artwork gives the game a very mysterious and bit of a melancholic touch.

Interesting experience and good game :)

Your game looks and sounds awesome! On a plus side it works great on mobile also.

As others mentioned, even with hints in info, I didn't manage to get all masks correctly. Maybe you can allow multiple masks to be accepted by the soul of they made sense, and have different story based on the selected mask. In the end, you can even get some insights about the players perspective about all presented souls and see if they are optimistic, pessimistic, empathic, good, evil, etc... and maybe the game could present one mask to the player as a gift for finishing based on the choices made.

Anyway, great game, I love it :)

Developer

Ooh allowing multiple masks to be accepted / have different stories is such an intriguing idea and one I had not considered! I also love your idea about player reflection, that's honestly genius. I love when games let you discover something about yourself through your choices, it's such a cool feeling.

I'm also glad it worked on mobile, I hadn't even tested that 😅

Thanks for your kind words and for playing, I'm really happy you liked it!

I really like your art style! I saw you post your art work on discord early on in the jam and wasn't sure how they would be used in a game but you've done a really good job here! The dialogs are well written too and full of character.

As others have said, a history or some sort of recipe book would have made the game easier. Other than that, I had good fun with this one. Well done!

Developer

I was wondering if anyone would recognize the art from Discord lol! Glad to hear it came together alright in the end, and I totally agree on adding some sort of history / recipe book! Thanks for the kind words and for playing :)

Wow, amazing visual, I really like your color palette and the UI overall. Very nice concept of crafting masks. I agree with others that have a mask history could’ve been nice, but it’s a jam after all.

Great game, well done!

Developer(+1)

So glad you liked it! And for sure, a mask history of some sort would have been amazing!! I ran out of time, but it's on my 'to keep working on' wishlist if I'm able to tweak this game after the jam. Thanks for your feedback and for playing my game!

The visuals are just incredible, I can't even express it enough! The game has a great concept and  is really well made, but the gameplay could see some improvements tho, maybe giving more tries for the player to get the correct mask or some type of notes with the masks you already made, so you don't end up forgetting the ingredients XD. I know that we don't have all the time in the world to add those things in the jam, but maybe in the future if you want to continue with the idea it would be a good starting point.

Developer

Thanks for the kind words!! I agree, if there was a way for players to remember ingredients or track the masks they'd already made that would be helpful (and maybe less frustrating for players)! I really appreciate your feedback, thanks for taking the time to play my game :)

I am SO BAD at these games. I don't know what they're called, but I've seen a few in this jam.

For instance, a poet without readers comes... so I choose humility and sorrow and he's like "dude, WTH is this mask??" haha, I seriously suck at these games, I wish I could be better so I can enjoy them more.

The art is... OMG, so beautiful, I remember like a queen so beautifully done,  All the characters, the environment, clearly you're a talented artist. Good job on this one!

Developer

Nah you're not bad at this game - it seems like a lot of people were confused / frustrated not knowing which ingredients went with what characters. When I first started working on the game, I had a list of characters, a rough idea of their stories, and two ingredients I chose for each character that made sense to me. To be honest, I should have spent more time making it make sense but ran out of time before I could do that 😭

I'm definitely taking notes from all the feedback though and will definitely be making tweaks to this game after the jam to improve the experience, hopefully it won't be so confusing! I'm so glad you liked the art and appreciate you taking the time to play it!!

amazing and stylish indeed! Loved the narratives, the stories and how the simple mechanics allowed for many options.

Great work! Truly the bees knees

Developer(+1)

Thank you! That makes me super happy to hear! Also 'the bees knees' might be my favorite compliment i've gotten so far :D

Really liked the energy of this one, don't tell the Waltz of the Faceless folks (https://itch.freezing.top/jam/godot-wild-jam-86/rate/3968789) this, but even though their version of this idea was very 'polished' I preferred your take in terms of art, music, and writing... very stylish!

That said, I found it impossible to get almost any masks right :'( which was very demoralizing. I guess if I knew the outcomes for each combination of elements ("radiant mask", "heavy mask" or w/e) then I would have been able to match the requests, but the information given just seemed completely insufficient for me to figure any of them out. I'd be like 90% sure I was right, and I was just wrong almost every time... Not sure the best way to improve that feeling to make it feel more like a 'skill' and less like guessing.

Oh I really liked the character designs too xD

Developer (2 edits)

Thank you so much! I actually played Waltz of the Faceless and was kicking myself a bit because it was close to what I'd originally imagined for my own game, but theirs had even better execution than what I'd thought of!

My Godot skills are still super basic, so I focused more on the story and art this time and I think the crafting part of the game suffered for it. You're right though - the mask combination system is so confusing. I agree the crafting/matching needs a lot more clarity.

Also I’m really happy you liked the character designs! They took me ages to come up with so it's awesome to know that was time well spent  :D

Incredible. I honestly don't go in for dialogue heavy games during jams, but this really spoke to me. The writing combined with your artwork and the ambient audio/backing track was really immersive and feels well contemplated.

Absolutely solid work, one of my favourites from this jam.

Developer (1 edit)

Ahhh thank you so much!! Hearing that means a ton, especially because I loved your game too. It makes me happy to hear the writing and art landed - those are usually the parts I struggle with the most. I know dialogue-heavy games for a game jam can be a risky move but I really wanted to try making a more story heavy game. Thank you for playing and for the kind words!!

10/10 Absolutely beautiful game. There seems to be a bug when you get the dialogue for the wrong mask for the first time and press the backwards button it cycles back to the end of their dialogue and you can accidentally make the spirit disappear. Other than that this was my favourite game from this jam so far.

Developer

Ahh thank you!! That's such high praise, I'm really glad you liked it! And thanks for letting me know about the arrow button bug - that's definitely something I will need to fix after the jam.

Your storytelling is amazing! The art and music flowed really well together, and overall this was a beautifully put together game :)

Developer

Awww thank you, reading your comment has made my day! I had a lot of fun working on the art & trying to find music that would fit so happy to hear you enjoyed it as well :D

Submitted(+1)

Wow that was a wonderful game! The art was super unique and the music added a great vibe. The dialogue of the spirits was really touching.

Developer

Thank you!! I'm glad you liked it!

Really beautiful color pallete and art. I feel some of the masks ingredients were to obscure to reliably figure out. But such a memorable and unique experience great job!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the art and colors, that means a lot! And thank you for mentioning the ingredients - it's good to know and it’s helpful feedback. I’m happy you still found it memorable!

Submitted(+1)

Beautiful game, both in the story and the art. I love your style! I agree with the other commenters that it did feel challenging to pair the right mask with the right spirit. I would read through what each material did and would often come out with no idea which ones made sense for that spirit. I also found that a few times I would try to go back and try again but the arrow would take me forward and send the spirit away. Overall, a lovely game. It made me sad that I couldn't get masks for all of them :( but thats a testament to your excellent writing and art! Well done!

Developer

Thanks so much!! I'm happy you enjoyed the story and the art. I also appreciate the feedback on the mask pairing and arrows too - it's helpful to know that so many people struggled with those two things. I'm glad to hear the writing resonated too, even if it was a little bittersweet. Thanks for playing and for the honest feedback!

This was one of the games that I was really looking forward to after seeing a few of your posts on Discord. And I was not disappointed - it was charming, aesthetic and beautiful. I can echo other commenters frustration at not being able to record made masks (or even if you don't want a recipe book - perhaps a shelf to keep them on)... but QoL things aside it was really lovely to play and read! Thank you.

Developer

Aww, thanks so much!! It makes me happy to hear that the game did not disappoint. I am very new to Godot / working in anything outside of the Ren'py engine, so I'm just happy to have something in a somewhat finished state!

Also I love the idea of a shelf for all the masks! I think adding something like that would definitely make the game less frustrating and would also be more immersive than just a menu.

Thanks again for the kind words and for playing :)

Submitted(+1)

This is beautiful! The tone of your story was carried through the gameplay, artwork, and writing. The character designs are wonderful, and I'm very impressed by the aesthetic and visual cohesion.

I'm seconding the other comments about the intuitiveness of the ingredients and which ones correspond to which prompt, but it sounds like you're already thinking about that! My other comment is that the forward and back arrows made things a little difficult to understand how to progress; occasionally I sent a spirit away by accident when trying to go backwards. I would have preferred a "try again" button, and maybe a place to reread their story.

Really good work on this!

Developer

Thanks a bunch! I'm glad the story and tone hit the mark, and I spent waay too much time on the art & characters so it makes me happy to hear that.

And thank you for mentioning the arrow issue, that definitely sounds like something I’ll need to fix. I love your idea for a “try again” button and a way to reread stories -  that would fit perfectly!

Really appreciate you taking the time to play and share your thoughts 💛

Submitted(+1)

Super original, and I loved the whole aesthetic of it! Awesome work.
Agreed that it's a little too hard to figure out which mask goes to which spirit, but, besides that, the game is beautiful.
Keep it up!

Developer

Thanks so much! I’m happy you liked it 😀 And yeah, I agree - the mask pairing could definitely use a bit more tweaking. Really appreciate you playing!

Submitted(+1)

My only complaint is that it was hard to figure out which mask goes to who, but other than that it was great!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks for playing! And yeah, I totally get that. As I was play testing I actually had trouble matching the masks to each character and I made the dang game  😂

Hopefully I can tweak it a bit after the jam. Glad you still enjoyed it!

Submitted(+1)

Oh, this is quite similar to ours in concept! I wish there was a recipe book where each found mask combination was recorded. It feels kinda like it's intended to play the game once with a notebook to jot down recipes and then a second one where I then properly apply them. That said, the art, writing and atmosphere is really, really lovely!

Developer

Ooh I love the idea of a recipe book!! I actually had something like that in mind but ran out of time 😭. If I end up updating the game after the jam it would probably be one of the first things I'd add.

I appreciate your thoughtful feedback!  Also Waltz of the Faceless looks super cool - I'm looking forward to playing it!

Submitted(+1)

I really enjoyed this, but I did find the puzzle of matching a person to their mask quite difficult. In the end, even after several replays I found it hard enough to keep straight that I had to make a table of every character's mask.

Developer

I appreciate you taking the time to play (and even make a table - that’s dedication)!! Balancing the puzzle aspect was tricky and I really struggled with how to make it challenging without being too frustrating or ambiguous. Your feedback is super helpful though - thank you!
