Heya! Decided to check it out but felt a bit lost at some points with the lack of direction halfway through and I ended up wandering around a lot.As for the art style it has really wonderful pixel art and felt really creepy! Amazing work and thanks for the game!!

Developer

Thanks for checking it out and sharing your feedback! After the rating leriod ends, I will upload a new build that has difficulty levels. Easier enemies will probably make searching around less stressful.

Combat feels a bit hard but maybe that's just me sucking at the game. Everything else is pretty damn good: atmosphere, sound, pixel art, etc.

Developer

Thanks so much for checking it out and leaving feedback! I'll upload a build with difficulty levels after the rating period, so you can experience the story with less of the frustration.

I really don’t like the colliders. Sometimes I just want some sliding. You know, in game like Overwatch the developers try to avoid rectangular shapes even for terrain objects.

The mood is cool.

Best flashlight implementation second only to Darkwood. Yall a little stingy with the battery tho, either that or I'm just hella wasteful.

Developer

Wow, that is high praise! Can I ask what you like about it?

As for the batteries: I wanted to discourage the player from just leaving the flashlight permanently on. Of course balance is always hard in a jam game.

Submitted(+1)

That's actually valid. Discouraging the use of flashlight is good, but I think the positional audio needs to be better to compensate for the low uptime of the flashlight.

Developer

Understood. I wasn't thinking about positional audio at all... another frontier to explore.

Developer

Quick question, what was it about the flashlight that you think worked particularly well? Gotta build on whatever I'm doing right. :)

Submitted(+1)

I guess it's a combination of several things:

  • How it feels like an actual light illuminating the scene instead of just a cone mask like in a lot of 2D games. It might be the blending of the cone's edge idk
  • How analog it is with the little flickering when low on battery
  • The smooth turning of the light beam with the mouse accompanied by the character's sprite changing orientation. This just works
  • The crisp click and clack audio when toggling the thing

There may be value in implementing some sort of ray tracing like the one in Darkwood, but that's another beast.

Developer(+1)

Thank you. That is extremely helpful.

It's very gratifying to get some love for the flashlight... because I actually spent the *entire first day of the jam* just implementing and tweaking the flashlight mechanics, then basically built the rest of the game around that.  😂

Adding real raycasting would significantly change the way the flashlight works, and might impact game design in certain ways.

But adding directional audio sounds like a very worthwhile avenue to investigate. I'll try to include that in the post-jam edition.

What an absolute joy to play! The writing, in particular, puts this game in a class of its own above most games I've played in my life, let alone in this jam. I'll have to play some of your other games, since you've said in the comments that this is not your first game in this setting.

Was there a third weapon to find? I played through twice and I could have sworn I visited every room and interacted with everything on each level, but I may have missed something...

Developer

Thanks so much for checking it out, and so happy you enjoyed it!

There are grenades in the final boss room, but I didn't include the rifle or the submachine gun in the game. There just wasn't enough time to get everything working correctly. :)

I'd love to hear what you think of the other games in this setting.

Very fun game! Had fun to explore the facility! I enjoyed the artstyle, very well done! Overall very fun and atmospheric game!

Developer

Thanks so much for checking it out and sharing your impressions!

Submitted(+1)

Very fun and atmospheric zombie game! And there's seems to be a lot of world building, too. Everything feels really polished, except the combat, because I have to time my attack very carefully, otherwise the zombie will manage to get a scratch on me,  but then I forgot that I can dash, so nvm, I guess. Love how the scribes stick to the protocol so hard they continued to work even after the incident. Great submission!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing and sharing your feedback! Glad you had fun.

This game will find its audience. But not me)

Developer(+1)

Thank you for giving it a shot!

Very polished game! The story’s great, and the horror vibe from the darkness after the flashlight runs out really pulls you in. Even when I knew where the zombies were, I still got jumpscared when they suddenly came into view! One small thing tho, some object colliders (like tables and doors) are way larger than they look, so I kept getting stuck while moving, which was extra annoying when zombies were chasing me 😂 Overall, it’s an excellent game and such a great experience! Btw, WHERE ON EARTH IS THE GATE KEY?? I haven’t even found the gun yet🥹

Developer

Thanks for playing, so glad you enjoyed it!

If the player is allowed to overlap too much with the walls or furniture, then when the player shoots, the bullets will instantiate inside the wall and disappear. When this problem reared its head, I decided to control it simply by making the player's collider higher than you (or I) intuitively think it should be. There are of course other ways to handle this problem, but it's all about tradeoffs. :)

If you're looking for the key to escape the room with the desks and the TV, make sure you search the corpses of your enemies. The gun is in the next level.

The art is really nice and polished, and I had no issues with the controls at all. Scarce resources make you resourceful. The zombie sound design is great, it instantly puts you on alert and lets you know one’s nearby. Having different utilities makes the gameplay more engaging, whether you risk using the knife to save ammo or rely on the gun to protect your health. It’s a shame I didn’t get the chance to use the grenade, though. One small thing I noticed is that sometimes a zombie takes 3 hits to kill, and other times 4. Overall, it’s really well done, especially given the short amount of time!

Developer

Thank you so much for trying it and sharing your detailed feedback! Glad to hear that you enjoyed it.

I had meant for there to be more action sequences, but I had to curtail the scope of the project toward the end. :)

Submitted(+1)

Wooooow, the visual design of this game makes it so polished! Zombie thing was a bit hard at first, but I really enjoyed the tone, which can be hard to achieve with horror and pixel art - but I think you nailed that! Even the font selection was a nice touch, the cool color palette, ominous sounds and a unique scifi-horror setting is very memorable. :)

Developer

Thanks so much for trying it, and for all your feedback! Glad you enjoyed.

Great fun! Loved the setting and story,  well done

Developer

Thank you for your kind words!

Submitted(+1)

This had a great pixel aesthetic and pallette along with a good use of lighting and a tight flashlight to keep things tense. A good range of sound effects and story tidbits thoroughout. Overall an impressively immersive atmosphere acheived in the time constraint!

Developer

Thank you for trying it and sharing your feedback! Glad you enjoyed. :)

Nice art and story, sadly I could not get past the first zombie, Left click did not seems to work :(

Developer

Left click is just regular click. Are you using a mouse or a trackpad?

Submitted(+1)

I'm on Windows 10 with a regular mouse.

Developer(+1)

Not sure why it wouldn't be responding. I haven't heard a report of this before. 🤔

You did pick up the knife, right?

Submitted(+1)

I did not picked-up the knife... Maybe I don't eat steak enough, ahah! I'll replay it more! :) thanks for the help!

Developer(+1)

Ooooh there you go! 🍴🍄

Submitted(+1)

Loved the limited color palette. Pixel art was superb. Story was interesting and held my attention all the way through. Combat was satisfactory and achieved its purpose. Not too hard or too easy. Loved the setting and religious vibes.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for checking it out & sharing your feedback! Glad you enjoyed. :)

Submitted(+1)

I got pushed against the wall and got stuck there. It was game over before I knew it!

Developer

Ooops. Sometimes the zombies push you into the collision. It seems infrequent and I didn't figure out exactly what causes it.

Thanks for trying it out!

Pretty cool midnight man

Developer

Thanks very much!!

Submitted(+1)

Fantastic game! I love the old school style art and the gameplay. The dialogue is also very well-written, maybe too well-written because I felt like a lot of the language flew over my head haha.

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for trying it out, I'm so happy you enjoyed it.

And since some of your slang went over my head, I suppose we're now even. 😉

Submitted(+1)

Touché haha, looking forward to trying more of your works <3

Submitted(+1)

Wow, this is really well design game!

You made really good story, I was really interested to pass the whole game!

I like mechanic of flashlight and dialogue, art is pretty nice!

What I would improve is fight mechanic, I got problems that enemy was rushing me and blocking me to death. I found out that I must run back and attack to survive :D

Good job and congratulations on your submission!

Developer

Thank you so much. I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
