Idea of skeleton in cart collecting souls is neat and roguelite elements could be interesting. But I think you need to work on the behavior and control of the vehicle a little bit. It did not feel right to me... but then again, I kinda suck in racing games :)
Also card drag and drop has a very funny bug :)
I did not expect something like this in a 4 day game jam! The song started soon getting on my nerves, but the art was great! Just be sure that the horizon line of the background roughly aligns with eyes of the characters or it wont work (like the background for the initial dialogue with mom, where it seems like you are looking down to floor, but the character is drawn like you are looking in front of you)
One thing I was thinking about. Wouldn't it be better to reset at the end of the day? Like you are trapped in a time loop like in Groundhogs day which resets in the evening back to the morning. And when you get everything right you will escape the time loop. It would allow player to gather clues throughout the day so he can better answer the questions. Resetting for each character is just guess work and a little bit tedious. It also promotes rushing through dialogues.
I almost gave up on the third level, before I realized you can kill the top snake just by jumping and slashing close. Personally I would not add particularly challenging things before you get to your hook. People might give up before.
The idea of ever changing levels is fun and I loved you included cut scenes, they really enhance the experience.
I liked how you progressively unlock the soundtrack. Thats very cool. I also liked the characters. Also, if this is your first game, really great job and do not let my criticism to deter you :) It is a great feat to finish a game in 4 days and I only wanted to provide some ideas for improvement.
I felt very stupid for a long time becuase the instructions are hidden on a screenshot with very dark font and when the game launches there is no instruction and no sound. I thought the game was bugged. Next time I suggest to put instructions in the main text and even ingame.
I have few suggestions that I think might push the game a bit:
- If you make a rhytm game do not start with dead silence. I know you are unlocking parts of the song by visiting planets, but maybe put in some "space humm" or something. I thought my sound is off or something, had to double check.
- On many planets you die 1 second after spawning. Show where the character is. Maybe even let it follow the path and when the countdown starts let player continue the path. It might be good to indicate which planet is the first one(easiest), so that players are not thrown off by difficulty. Something like "<-- start here"
- there is no rhytm. I would expect there would be some kind of beat you follow when doing laps around the planets.
- it was not clear to me at first if I did the planet correctly or not. The screen looks the same when I die, just the buttons are switched.
Interesting concept. I liked how you combine roguelite elements with fighting game. Also, it looks great, really like the style.
One issue I was stuck early on is, that you are taught to click throught the dialogue with spacebar. But then suddenly you are tasked to click an option with a mouse. It is not clearly indicated that you are supposed to do something different (the button does not highlight when mouse is over it) and the text still indicates that I should press "space".
What I think might also also improve the game is a bit more responsive combat - like right now there is a little pause after an attack where I cannot do anything, which was very annoying to me. Then the little things like showing my characters health, showing graphically what each upgrade option does so I do not have to read the whole text.
