Beanie is so op! Very cute game
Overall:
The core gameplay is known from tower-defense games and itβs fun! I find the idea itself innovative, and I really like the presentation. At the beginning I expected something more like a horror game, but the game stayed rather cute in my opinion. The upgrade functions add a lot to the game — although the balancing could use some polish. I had no issues, but some upgrades felt unnecessary. For example, Damage Upgrade 2 and 4+. At first you defeat enemies with 3 shots, then with 2 after the upgrade. With the next upgrade, it stays at two shots (which is a bit frustrating and unnecessary since there is only one enemy type). With the third upgrade, enemies finally become a one-shot (very strong!) — and further upgrades then become unnecessary since you already one-shot everything.
Still, the game is fun, and the short intro is very motivating. I could imagine this game working excellently as a horror game as well (jumpscares, more enemy types, droning ambience instead of music, different enemy movement patterns…). I think itβs a very good foundation to build upon.
Graphics:
Simple but functional low-poly 3D graphics with bright colors — fitting for the theme. The UI (button colors, layout) could be improved a bit. Using a consistent color palette for the UI would be helpful — for example by looking at Lowspec palettes. Also I would suggest using another font - maybe a bit more playful so it fits the children's room theme.
Music:
The music supports the distinction between the two gameplay phases. The sound effects work well. I could imagine a droning ambience working even better for the night phase.
Theme:
Very well implemented!
Conclusion:
A simple tower-defense game in a unique setting — with a lot of potential for becoming a horror game in my eyes. A really solid entry!
Hey thanks for playing and the elaborate feedback.
The balancing is definitely off. I olanned to add more pluchies and enemies, but ran out of time. Balancing was done in 15 minutes π
Cheers!
Really cute and wholesome game! THis fit the theme of One room perfectly and the gameplay was fun. I loved that you did all the art by yourself, the game looks great and the room is very nicely designed! On the gameplay a little bit of variety in the enemies/ toys would have made it even more fun, but its not a huge deal. THe upgrades and enemies were quite balanced and the power spikes were quite organic. The difficulty also could have been slightly higher since after getting the 2nd plushie i was invincible :D Overall the vibe of the game was very nice, the music and sfx were good and fit the theme. Well done :)
Thanks a lot for playing and commenting π
Very cute game!
This is very cute game, I loved the art even my little sister deemed it cute as well! The music and sfx is on point, The gameplay is great as well it took me couple of tries to find the perfect upgrade combo to reach the end. Simpl and cutest game I've ever seen. Well done!
Hey thanks a lot. Glad your little sister liked it too. :)
My own daughter is actually eight years old, so I had her as a critic right by my side to ensure cuteness (and the pluchie is an exact copy of her favorite one).
Cheers!
The visuals and lighting are great; the single-room theme feels natural. An enjoyable game, well done!
Pretty enjoyable little tower defense game with a cute premise, impressive that you made all the assets by yourself in only 10 days, nice entry!! A 3d tower defense with stuffed animals as turrets was a unique take on the genre, and I really enjoyed being able to manipulate the camera and view the scene from different angles. There's some really nice bits of visual details that stood out to me: the florescence of the rainbow at night, the real time shadows of the nightmare enemies through the window, the contrast of the bright energy beam shot by the stuffed animals, etc.
The visuals are nice, but it is obvious that "gameplay was sacrificed a bit for looks here" lol. There's really no depth to the gameplay , just place the tower somewhere in the middle and buy the upgrades when you can afford them until you win. Part of the big appeal of tower defense games is the player being forced to make a decision about where to place turrets and which upgrades to choose, and that was lacking in this one. I thought the sound design was solid and the daytime jingle was very catchy. The stuffed animal model was adorable but I felt the nightmare enemy was lacking in personality and felt a bit uninspired.
Overall, I think you have a very interesting premise for a game with some really cute visuals, but the shallow gameplay prevents it from getting to that next level. Kudos to you for creating all the models and sound yourself, that is an impressive feat, and they are all well-executed. Cool entry, and keep up the good work!
Hey thanks for the extensive review and feedback.
Great points for improving. It needs way more balance and depth to become a "real" tower defence game for sure.
I'm still thinking about a way to make enemy pathing more interesting. The flying in a straight line is way too predictable. But have them follow a path through the roomnlike most TD games do feels a bit off. Probably keeping the straight line but adding other enemies that behave differently is the key here, but still thinking about that one.
Cheers for your constructive input!
Maybe you could expand the room size a bit and have another window and maybe a door that the enemies can enter through? so then there are 3 potential paths for the enemies to take, just a thought
What a delightful little game! It has fun narrative and graphics is awesome! Like mentioned below, the UI itself could be made better but it feels happy. It fits well in the theme too. I wish there was some variety in plushies. I was able to upgrade just two plushies and complete the game! Not a complaint again but I yearn for more variety :D
Hey thanks a lot for playing and the feedback!
Balance and variety are definitely lacking. I spent way too much time on the visuals and had to grind out the gameplay in too short a time. Balancing was literally done in 15 minutes :D
Cheers!
Visible schmo's sprite animator here!
I enjoyed the game with its art direction. I found it fun but easy with being able to win every round with just one Beanie. I found the music a bit loud, but didn't want to mute it. The nights were also a tad boring, with just watching and not being able to shoot them myself, but I did enjoy seeing the beanie fire a magic thing at the nightmares.
I enjoyed the game overall, though! I think y'all did an amazing job :D!
nice game and cool art ,
the only thing is music mute buttom glitch sometime.
that all . nice game
First of all- graphics style war really cool. Flat shading with vibrant colors worked really nice.
Same goes for the use of the theme. The "one room" makes sense as a setting, and it affects the gameplay in the meaningful way. Also- the plot hit me just the right way- when you have kids, protecting them from nightmares is what you want to do!
As for the gameplay itself. What's there works fine, but I'd really like to see more. More plushies, different bad dreams, more gameplay variety over all.
You can really see the polish in the game, but a bit more variety would elevate it a lot!
Thanks a bunch for the feedback. Gameplay is definitely lacking in depth. I focused so much on the theme and graphics I had to grind in the last 2 days of the jam for some gameplay, haha.
I liked working on in though and might be working on it some more after the jam. More enemies, plushies and upgrades would be the obvious aditions indeed.
Cheers!
