One of the best of the jam without a doubt. My god I can't even imagine how you guys managed to do so much in such a short amount of time, let alone a fully fleshed out story with an amazing use of visuals and the point and click mechanic. I aspire to create a game with just as much narrative details as yours now. Congrats on your game!

By the way what tips do you have to creating a narrative driven game, especially in a tight timeframe. I want to try my hand at one next that would be worth at least 2 and a half stars on my letterboxd account.

Developer

Thank you for the kind words! For us the key to getting a narrative game done in this time is really nailing down the scope of the story before you begin, and getting at least a draft of the whole story in as early as you can. In this case we are using some tools that we've developed from previous games (to handle narrative state, cameras, fade in/out, etc), and using that to throw the game together end to end as fast as we can.

I think we had the full story in place with placeholder scenes by Day 3 for this jam, and then we could spend the rest of the time editing and polishing the dialogue, building out the scenes, etc.

For Godot, I highly recommend Nathan Hoad's Dialogue Manager plugin, it's very flexible but gives you a lot of power to easily write branching dialogue, hook into state and events, etc.

Thanks again for playing!

Hey SGGGames, we are releasing this game in a polished format on Steam along with two other cases as The Grant Grover Anthology. Would you mind if I used parts of your review as a testimonial on the Steam page? Thanks again for your kind words! :)

Yes, of course you can. Sorry for responding a little late. Thanks so much for responding!

What an interesting idea. Previous play affects the story, so I guess none of us had the exact same experience?

I found it quite easy, but perhaps that's because I'm late to the party and benefiting from previous players.

So much effort has gone into story telling on this, it's a breath of fresh air versus another shooter or platformer. Top marks for creativity!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing! There are some slight changes to the dialogue based on the number of previous players, and of course earlier runs would not have had the benefit of the safe code being revealed. We're hoping to do more with the mechanic in future games!

I'm generally not a huge fan of too much text and not enough gameplay but daaaaamn his got me hooked. Such good story telling and such a great vibe! Reminds me a lot of Shadowrun. 🤩

Developer

So glad you enjoyed it, thanks for playing!

I love what you've made with that cyberpunk and noir detective mix! And it's great that there will be post-jam fixes and maybe content as it will be even be even better to have more time to develop the augmentations topic.

The decision to have some memories require player collaboration is interesting. Given how many people are displeased (not without a reason) with ratings disbalance and rate for rate spamming it's a great reminder that creativity solves many unfairness issues and that games exist alongside marketing, communities and platforms.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Definitely looking forward to exploring some of these topics further, in this game and future games :)

Amazing story. Liked the fact that the picture opens up more with each new player. Very interesting mechanic

Damn!!! I didn't expect this at all. One of the best and most innovatives games in this jam. Congrats! Everything is really great. My only issue is the audio clips a little too much but for the rest the game is great.

Developer

Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed it!

I didn't notice the audio clipping but audio is not my strong suit, was it some of the sound effects?

Submitted (1 edit)

most of the ambience when it loops and yes some sound effects also. but don't worry! i believe most people doesn't notice

That's great Ben! I'd be glad :) already wishlisted it.

I really like the idea of having other people’s playthroughs affect future ones but I wish it had been signposted more in game, when asked to “click to reveal a part of the memory” I just started clicking around thinking it would clear the rest of the image up, not realizing I was picking a small chunk to reveal to help others after me. There’s also the curiosity of what actually changed from the first person’s experience?

It’s neat and a fun change of pace for a game jam idea for sure, glad to have experienced it :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! We considered having a "New Game +" mode where you could simulate the specific playthrough you wanted (eg. play as if this is the 2nd play), but we didn't end up getting to use the mechanic enough to really make it worthwhile.

Good point on signposting the memory reveal, especially that you would only get one click. I'd like to find an in-universe way to make that clearer.

Thanks for the feedback!

What an absolute cinema experience! The way you introduced “The Biscuit” was super creative and really incredible. The story kept me engaged the whole time, always wanting to know what’s coming next (that girl nobil or something can't remember her name getting clapped tho 😂). You guys did such a great job with this one, and I loved the little details, like clicking to restore memories—which added a nice touch.

This could easily turn into a fantastic full game if you added some gameplay elements, like letting the player actually visit places and investigate scenes themselves. Full stars from me! ❤️

Developer

Thank you so much for these kind words! We're really glad you enjoyed it, and we're definitely thinking of how we could pull off a full game in this style 🕵️

really interesting idea to have previous playthroughs affect future ones! i wish there were more instances throughout the game of that coming up, as it felt a little underutilized. i'm also not 100% sure where the "risk it" for the theme comes in, but the biscuit was a cute inclusion! making a visual novel in such a short time is definitely impressive, and the writing was well done! it felt slightly long for a jam game, tho that feels impressive for such a short jam. overall, great job!

Developer

We definitely want to explore the impact of other playthroughs impacting the one you are on in the future. Thanks for playing through the game.

Wait... those replay numbers weren't fake? The idea of all of us playing this together is really cool! It opens up so many possibilities, like leaving clues or notes to each other etc. I loved it, great work!

Developer(+1)

They were real! And I agree, I love the idea of sharing asynchronously with other players in a game like this - we actually did a whole episode of our podcast where we riffed on ideas for this sort of mechanic, and I'm keen to build some more prototypes that use it. (Tell me if you want a link to the podcast episode, I won't post it immediately to avoid being spammy, haha)

Submitted(+1)

Of course, I'd love to check it out

Developer(+1)

Sure thing, here you go! The podcast is an improvised video game podcast, so we come up with new game ideas every week: https://www.bitstormcast.com/episode/secretly-sassy-shrubbery

This is really awesome, every time I find a narrative game in a jam it slaps, and this is no different! Writing is on point and got a few chuckles out of me when referring to the "water" Grant drinks. Every character felt fun to talk to and while I don't know how much your decisions matter (apart from the safe), it felt nice to decide what I wanted to say. Vibe is on point, music is really well done and got me in the mood, you used synty assets quite well and set the scene perfectly! Main menu is very nicely done too! You've already mentioned the fixes you want to do in the itch page so I won't go over that. Wasn't expecting the surprise reveal with the safe ending but it was cool, and what a cool idea to reveal the code bit by bit with every player's playthrough (and also the amount of times the game has been replayed brought up in dialogue). This is so cool and really impressive for a jam! Seriously fantastic work!

Haha, thanks for playing.

Very cool, I really enjoy these types of games and this one was interesting. I like how players that came before can affect your run. Leaves me wanting more, options, choices, questions.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! We'd love to do another game in a similar style with more expanded options and effects from other players runs, for sure.

Your game has been one of my favourite of the jam so far, too!

Submitted(+1)

This was crazy good! Nice work, I loved the Noir PI theme and the worldbuilding and setting were so spot on. I was in suspense the entire run and then the second time, I was able to learn the truth. I think I got both extended ending - very nicely written. The concept of having the mechanic unlock the more people played it was really cool - I would love to see what you can do with a longer dev time (and how is that implemented?)

Again, huge props for the writing. I sensed a lot of influence from cyberpunk classics like Neuromancer, and I found the parallels between the augmented and our everyday run of the mill powered by ads population to be quite eerie.

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for checking out the game. Really cool you were able to experience the other ending too.

Developer(+1)

I think that makes you the first to see either of the extended endings, well done!

We're using simple Websockets to talk to a server running Partykit on Cloudflare, where we're just storing some basic stats about how many people have played, the points that have been revealed on the memory, etc. We'd definitely love to do more with the idea in future, potentially bringing in statistics based on what choices people have made, in-game probabilities based on play data, etc.

Thanks for the kind words!

That was an intense experience from start to finish. The art-style almost felt lego-like and it worked so well with the film-noire aesthetic! The music added to the intensity of the atmosphere. And of course, the writing had me hooked! Awesome!

Developer

Thanks for playing, really glad you enjoyed it! We're so pleased with the music Hugo wrote for the game, and I'm glad the aesthetic worked for you 😊

Okay, I’ll be honest – I’m not a fan of visual novels… so at the beginning I skipped everything and just wanted to jump straight into the game. When I realized what kind of genre it was, I was put off at first, but then I thought, “Come on, give the game a fair chance – even if it’s absolutely not my type of game.” So I started over and actually read through the text. I ended up getting really drawn into the story and was very positively surprised! On top of that, the art style is fantastic! The soundtrack is great as well and perfectly complements the atmosphere. Even though I’m not usually a fan of this kind of game, I can only say – great job! It was a real pleasure :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for giving it a go. I’m glad you enjoyed the story and atmosphere we all created.

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Awesome work, wasn't expecting a visual novel in the jam! The story is very nice. It's cool that you guys linked everyone's playthrough together! Did the other 34 playthroughs before mine influence how much of the code I saw, or does everyone have their own amount with each session?

Developer(+1)

There are some slight changes in the script based solely on how many other people have played, but not on what decisions they've made. (We would've liked to have gone more in-depth with that, but it would have taken too long)

And then the memory reveal of the safe code shows of all the segments other players have revealed, so once enough people have played, somebody will be the first to see the extended ending :)

Submitted(+1)

Really cool entry! I wasn’t sure if this style would click with me at first, but the atmosphere and writing pulled me in and I ended up playing longer than expected. Super impressive for just a week. Well done!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing, glad it resonated with you!

I’m in awe that this was able to be made in a week! The game’s atmosphere is so polished and to top it off also had a great story!
